Why impeach a loser?

Why are they impeaching him when he is no longer president, anyway? Of course the reader knows I am referring to American President Donald Trump who has already been unseated by Joe Biden. I heard later, though, that if he is impeached, he will no longer be able to run for president again. So that is their ploy to make sure he never gets back to office. For, of course, he must still have a following that can put him back if he has a mind to.

I often feel amused when I read news items from American sources where it is emphasized or underscored that so-and-so is the “first” woman to hold such a high office. It seems to me that, as far as equality among the sexes is concerned, we in the Philippines are far ahead of them. We have so many women who have been occupying political positions, from barangay kagawads, to capitans, councilors, vice mayors, mayors, governors, congresswomen, senators, and even two presidents!

Meanwhile, what’s going on between the United States and China? Is one baiting the other? This got to my mind when I heard on TV that the U.S. is going to use a “strategic patience” towards that country. Why, is China baiting the U.S.? Our other world leaders had better mediate before matters get worse, because we will all be affected if ever these two  get into conflict. Remember the saying that when giants fight the pygmies tremble? And who are the pygmies?

The media did not forget – yesterday it was prominently noted that the day was the first anniversary of the death of basketball giant, Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash with his young daughter. Who among basketball fans did not mourn for Kobe? Me, I can hardly believe that someone so gifted, and also so humble, would be taken away so soon. He was a great idol of Pinoy basketball fans and he gave them “consuelo” or chances to see him in person by coming to Manila several times. When the news of his death in that chopper accident came out thousands of his fans wept and mourned for him, and I admit I did, too.

I heard that British Prime Minister Johnson has announced that he is planning to use hotels as quarantine centers. Where did he hear about that? Does he get news from our country? At least we know that Bacolod was among the first to utilize hotels and inns for quarantine. Most of them are used for free by those who cannot afford it, but those who can are free to select which ones they will be held in if they pay for their stay themselves.

Am I imagining it, or is the pandemic easing its hold on our city and province? Please Dear Lord, make it so. The statistics we’ve been getting lately seem to indicate so. Let us therefore go on with the precautions we have been instructed to observe, and perhaps we may see the end of this scourge before summer. We have lost far too many members of our communities to it, thankfully, not as much as some other countries, but let us continue to be careful and prayerful that we and our loved ones will be protected.

But maybe it is still so soon to be “campante” about this virus, because even the cures and vaccines discovered for it get confounded by the new variants that also keep popping up. At first it was believed that the “Moderna” was it, but lately other variants not within the control of Moderna have been reported. Among the countries hard hit by the COVID is the United Kingdom where 30,000 victims had been reported, but, so far, more than six million have been vaccinated and, hopefully, immunized against it.

But have you noticed how quickly time is passing ever since we entered the New Year? Today, we are already on the 27th of January, four days more to go before the month of hearts and flowers comes on.  Will it be a more peaceful and healthier month? It is also known as the month of love because the feast of St. Valentine the  patron saint of love and lovers falls in it. I think we should also invoke his intercession with God the Father to seek our liberation from this pandemic, and all other ailments that may be brought  on in the coming months of this new year.*
