What is China hiding?

How healthy is our country? The thought occurred after hearing all those reports about the alleged scandals supposedly unearthed right in the Department of Health itself. Now there is even talk about a “Mafia” existing in that department involving its highest officials. I hope the President gets hopping mad at that and, not only send those guilty packing, but also make sure that they are sent where they can have all the time to repent for their sins. If proven to be true, those involved have committed sins that cry to heaven for vengeance, because the thievery must havedeprived thousands of people, citizens of the country, who deserve its protection, of what the law provided for them.

I think it is very prudent of President Duterte to keep himself scarce, except on TV, these days. Being the head of the country, he must stay healthy, and with all his attention focused on its problems and directions, rather than going around to show sympathy and get media coverage, which will be for naught at this time. I was glad to see on TV a meeting in Malacañang he was presiding over, and I noted that he and the members of the cabinet with him were all seated at more than the required six-feet “distancing”. And all of them were wearing masks, which is setting a good example.

I noted from reports that some of our tourism sites are set to reopen , And among them is Tagaytay, but there will be rules to follow to prevent transmission of the COVID 19 to locals, as well as visitors. It is understandable that city is anxious to open its tourist spots, but I hope all “protocols” are observed to prevent contamination from those who arrive from other areas in the country and even from abroad. We cannot be too careful with such an incomprehensible disease as this one.

Let us put in our minds the fact that even the wealthiest and most advanced countries in the world have, so far, been unable to find a cure, or a vaccine, although scientist and medical people are burning the midnight oil, figuratively, to find one. Seems the Russians have announced one, and China, also, but require advanced payments before they share them with other countries. I won’t be surprised if other countries, especially the poorer ones, will be willing to do so, much less afford it. It is a case of “Show us your money first”. And what if it does not work?

I laughed out loud when I heard on TV President Donald Trump declare that the COVID disease “will go away soon”. Was that a campaign promise? Did he dream that or hadan angels appeared to him with the message? But silly and incomprehensible as he may sound at times, he certainly is getting more coverage than his opponent. Joe Biden, who seems to be working quietly, but how effectively, who can tell? And wasn’t it Trump who had admitted that he knew about the possibility of the disease hitting his country, but decided to “play it down” in order “not to cause panic”?

So, no panics, only transmissions by the thousands and, as of now, I have yet to wait for the latest report on cases and casualties. Maybe his motto is “What you don’t know won’t hurt you”? It could be that such “downplaying” had encouraged colleges and universities to open, only to record new cases in campuses. I hope our schools will take a cue from that and not be too hasty in declaring school openings. Especially with the news that cases have been growing since the start of this month. Only the other day, it was reported that there were 269,407 cases in our country and 259 died in a single day.

Meanwhile, what secret is China hiding from the rest of the world? We know that this deadly COVID came from their city called Wuhan and soon found its way around the world. And yet we haven’t heard any statistics from there on how the disease has affected their country. I heard a report saying that only frontliners were affected in that country. If it is true there are already about 30 million cases worldwide, what percentage of that were from China, where it started?

Oh, let’s not dwell on somber matters now and start thinking that there are less 100 days now until Christmas. Surely the Good Lord will bless us with better times when He marks His birthday! So let us be more hopeful and start praying and asking Jesus and His Heavenly Father to ease our problems now and grant us a happy Christmas season. And it is not too far away remember the “September Song”. I can’t recall the entire song but it did start with “Oh, it’s a long, long time/from May to December/ But the days grow shorter/When we reach September…” So there you are! Christmas and its blessings will soon be here!*
