Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

The mayor of General Luna, Quezon City, must have a very romantic turn of mind. He has declared holidays for single employees, at least allowed them to go on leave on February 11 to 13, the days  preceding Valentine’s Day, that falls on a Sunday this year. The report didn’t say if widows and widowers, as well as separated and divorced ones are included, but of course a lot of his staff will appreciate him very much for that. I think I know why he did not include married employees. He must be afraid there would be a big increase in population in the next nine months!

Well, it is still a full week before V-Day, so there is a chance for the unattached ones to find a reason to qualify for the privilege, but in these days of the COVID and other problems, any holiday should be very welcome, although those who are not careful how they spend them could expose themselves to the virus and regret  havingbeen too carefree with their free days. And if it is true that cases in our country are waning, all the more reason for everyone to be careful to prevent a recurrence. Meanwhile, will the vaccines the Philippines is reported to be receiving be enough for its population or will it only be the major cities and towns to be covered?

***

Meanwhile, reports on Saturday said that about 40 million have already been vaccinated in the United States. That is not even half of their population, is it? What about the Philippines, have we started vaccinations already, and where? And which kind has our Health officials chosen – the Pfizer or Astrazeneca? If both have been proven effective, there should be no arguments about which to choose, we should avail ourselves of what can start the process as soon as possible, and not because one has a nicer-sounding name than the other!

In the United States now, one of the main topics for the population in the impeachment of Donald Trump. Frankly, it puzzles me why a president who has already been ousted at the polls still has to be impeached. But their laws are different from ours, and maybe I am only ignorant about the “double-kill” legislation there? I understand the consequence of that is that the impeached one can not run for the office again. That sounds reasonable. We’ve never had an official impeached in our country, have we? I guess our people as well as officials are too forgiving and tend to look the other way when cases that justify impeachment are staring them in the face.

Back to the subject of vaccines, I just heard that cases are falling in the United States after vaccinations started to be accepted by more people. In fact the same report claimed that the number of new cases of the COVID has gone down by 15 percent. That is not much, but perhaps vaccinations have not been taken place involving more people, and will increase when fears and suspicions against them disappear? I haven’t got any statistics on local results, but certainly I hope they are encouraging , too.

What a time for oil-producing countries to hike their prices! Maybe this is because they are selling less of their products than before as people now have less tendency to travel and use as much of their products?  Well, I, for one, should not complain, I have not “filled up” for several weeks, until an increase in prices was announced. Maybe such companies are not doing as profitably as they used to, hence the price increases. When, Oh when, will that promise of an oil source in our country be fulfilled?

I am sure many other fans of basketball are agog about the NBA season, but I know too, that they, like me, will be missing badly the presence of Kobe Bryant who was one of the most popular and admired players of their team. His demise was all the more heartbreaking because it was not from natural causes, he perished in a helicopter crash, with his young daughter, too. I think his fans mourned as much as his family for what was a truly untimely departure. I still find myself praying for him and his little daughter, especially now that the NBA season is nearing, or is it on already?

As I write this, news came out on TV that the Holy Father, himself had submitted to vaccination. So what are our citizens still afraid of? If our country has acquired the amount that can cover all our people, we should be thankful, instead of doubtful. Remember how our ancestors got rid of smallpox and other deadly diseases after they accepted vaccination? If you are not thinking of yourself, think of those who depend on you.*
