A suspected member of the New People’s Army died in an encounter with 62nd Infantry Battalion soldiers in Sitio Mabanga, Brgy. Bagtic, La Libertad, Negros Oriental, disclosed yesterday by Army regional spokesman Maj. Cenon Pancito III.
The slain rebel,whose identity has not been established as of this time, was left behind by his fleeing comrades, Pancito, who is the 3rd Infantry Division Public Affairs Office chief, said.
Also recovered from the encounter site were various war materials, including an M16 assault rifle with a magazine, an anti-personnel landmine, a rifle grenade, three back packs, four cellular phones, a solar panel and subversive documents with high intelligence value.
A suspected NPA “amazon” was also captured by 12th Infantry Battalion soldiers in another encounter with communist rebels on March 16 in Brgy. Dabong, Janiuay, Iloilo.
Pancito said that Nena Fernando, 66, who is a resident of Brgy. Ara-al, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, while seeking refuge in a house in the barangay, where she was left by her comrades.
Army soldiers also recovered a 45 caliber pistol with two magazines containing seven live ammunition, components in making an improvised explosive device, including 10 meters of electrical wire as well as personal belongings.
Major Gen. Eric Vinoya, 3ID commanding general, said that the two encounters was a product of the vigilance and support of the local populace to the Army by feeding correct and timely information on the movement of the New People’s Army, and the unending efforts and strategies of every soldier in intensifying the government’s campaign against insurgency in the region.
“We will mobilize all of our capabilities to make sure that these communist-terrorists will not have the opportunity to unleash violence in Negros and Panay islands, Vinoya also said.*
