Archbishop Jose Romeo Lazo of Jaro*

The Archdiocese of Jaro in Iloilo is asking for prayers for Archbishop Jose Romeo Lazo as he recovers from the coronavirus disease 2019, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said yesterday.

Fr. Angelo Colada, director of the Jaro Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications, said that Lazo has been admitted to a hospital in Iloilo City and remains in a stable condition.

He said the archbishop sought a swab test after suffering “mild symptoms” of Covid-19 early this week, which turned out to be positive.

Contact tracing was immediately initiated to contain the spread of the infection and the archbishop’s residence was placed on lockdown.

Of the 14 persons identified as close contacts of Lazo, only his driver tested positive of the disease, the CBCP said.

“The 14 people, mostly priests, those in the seminary and the people staying with him in the residence all tested negative, except his driver,” Colada told Radio Veritas.

Lazo, 72, is fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

4 NUNS DIE OF COVID

Meanwhile, four nuns from the Carmelite Order Monastery in La Paz district, Iloilo City, have died of Covid-19.

Colada said the Carmelite sisters, who passed away, were among the 33, who tested positive for the virus, consisting of 24 nuns and nine monastery staff.

“So out of 24, seven were taken to the hospital because they showed symptoms but four of them died,” he said in an interview over Radio Veritas yesterday.

It was reported that 45 residents of the monastery underwent swab testing on July 24 after having close contact with another nun, who had previously tested positive for the virus.

The positive results of the 33 residents prompted the Iloilo City government to order the lockdown of the entire monastery on July 25.

Colada added that the other nuns and staff who tested positive are still recovering, while those who tested negative for Covid-19 are under mandatory quarantine for close monitoring.

Iloilo City is under Enhanced Community Quarantine until August 15.*PNA
