A group of fully-armed men shot and killed a civilian driver of the police Saturday, before ransacking his home in Sitio Bautista, Brgy. Malasibog, Escalante City, Negros Occidental.

The victim identified as Arjie Buenavista succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot, Maj. Gil John Despi, Escalante City police chief, said yesterday.

Despi confirmed that Buenavista had served as a civilian driver of the Escalante City Police Station for two weeks, being a job order casual of the city government, before the incident.

The Escalante City police said the victim and his children were watching a television program, when about 10 armed men arrived and called out his name.

When he saw the armed men, Buenavista, tried to rush into his residence, but was shot by one the suspects.

The armed men, who were reported to have been looking for a gun, also ransacked the house of the victim before fleeing towards the mountainous area of the barangay.

Despi said that they are looking into the possibility that the armed men are members of the New People’s Army.

Recovered from the scene of incident were three empty shells and a misfired bullet of an M-16 assault rifle, as well as a fired cartridge of a .45 caliber pistol.*GPB
