Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Has the COVID 19 not affected Israel and Palestine? All that we hear about those countries are about the conflict between them that has been causing  the death of their people, among them their young children. What has the United Nations done to get them to call a ceasefire while the rest of the world is grappling with this vicious virus that has been causing more casualties than a war? It is indeed a big cause of concern to everyone that our present civilization seems to be self-destructing!

I don’t mean to be a scaremonger, but where are the cooler heads that can intervene and make both Palestine and Israel call “PEACE”? Why are their citizens so bellicose, even with a pandemic raging? The reports are full of rockets zooming through the air in those areas, and footages on TV are truly scary, especially when the accompanying reports tell  about casualties. By the way, are those countries not victims of COVID? Seems  not, because what we hear about them are only about the rockets and the casualties. All man-made killers that could have been prevented by mediation.

It is no joking matter but I almost laughed out loud when I heard a reporter say that “slow global response” had enabled the Coronavirus, a.k.a. COVID, to spread so widely and so fast. What had our medical experts and scientists been doing, then? From the very start, it has been revealed how dangerous it could be, but only lately have we heard about vaccines, and have been able to have access to it for our people. So whom are we blaming for the “slow global response”. Doesn’t it make all of us feel guilty?

But maybe we should clear our minds of the COVID, even if we sympathize with the people of India that, apparently is among the worst hit countries. What could have been the reason why it is India, and not China, where it originated, specifically in the city called Wuhan? Has China discovered a vaccine as well as a cure earlier that it has not shared with the world? Why, then, is it India  that seems to bearing the brunt of this deadly virus. If anyone has explained why, I am very unhappy about missing it. All I do now is continue to pray to the Good Lord to inspire our scientists and medical people to discover a cure for it.

Let’s divert ourselves for a while and talk about beauty contests. Can anyone still remember who was that official who said that beauty contests are “irrelevant”? Well, they certainly do not contribute to the economy or to the reputation of a country, but often, we send candidates who cause us international embarrassment, too. I can no longer remember those who had made statements or comments that made me wince, but the latest Miss Philippines, no offense meant, should be briefed very intensively on how to deal with the question and answer portion.

***

Once they are picked to represent our country, the Miss Universe or Miss International bet should be intensely drilled on how to answer questions that the judges, or even the media pose to her. We have heard of some faux pases in the past, not only from our own candidates, but from other non-English speaking countries. The current Philippine bet, let’s not mention the name, should be reminded, or briefed on Philippine History as well. I saw and heard on TV an interview of our current candidate, and I tell you, I squirmed again when I heard her say that she is grateful (or did she say happy?) to represent the “island of the Philippines”!

***

My dear girl, where did you study Philippine History? Your country is now a republic equal to any of those big ones made up of solid land, not just islands. Do not embarrass your fellow Pinoys abroad by saying that when the finale of the contest, the “Question and Answer” portion, comes around. Otherwise we will disown you. Oh, and there are other signs that things are slowly getting back to normal. The famous Broadway in the U.S. has  announced that it is opening with a new show in September, and tickets are now on sale!

By the way, isn’t it time the President set out on his jetski and confront those Chinese vessels robbing our West Philippine Sea of the fish that Filipino fishermen should be harvesting instead? The latest news I heard said that lately, I think it was only last week, 300 Chinese vessels were again hauling tons of fish from that area. I am no warhawk, and not suggesting that we quarrel with China, but shouldn’t someone take  this matter up with the United Nations? What is our Department of Foreign Affairs doing?*
