P1.6 million in shabu in tea packs

The shabu, worth P1.6 million, concealed in tea packages and seized by the Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport yesterday*

The Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport seized yesterday a package containing various tea products that were discovered to contain 240 grams of shabu with an estimated street value of P1.6 million, in a warehouse in Pasay City.

In a statement, the bureau said the contraband was found concealed in one of the tea products’ packaging during a physical examination by a Customs examiner.

The package, declared as “assorted foodstuff”, was shipped by a certain “Yong Lee Chei” to a consignee from Caloocan City.

It added that the sample submitted to Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency laboratory tested positive for shabu.

Records show that the package came from Malaysia, the same as the P1.63 billion worth of shabu seized on Oct. 31, 2020, also wrapped in tea packaging.

The parcel was turned over to PDEA for case profiling and buildup and possible prosecution of the persons responsible for violation of Section 119 on restricted importation and Section 1401 on unlawful importation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and RA 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

Aside from BOC-NAIA, the operation was conducted in coordination with PDEA and NAIA’s Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.*
