BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The provincial government of Negros Occidental will press for booster shots if the Covid-19 Delta variant endangers healthcare workers, provincial administrator Rayfrando Diaz said yesterday.

This also developed as the Iloilo City government announced yesterday that it has logged its first case of the more contagious Delta variant.

The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit reported during a meeting with the city’s Covid Team yesterday that an employee of a company in the Molo district of Iloilo tested positive of the Delta variant on July 9 and still yielded a positive result during a repeat testing on July 23.

The infected person has not been vaccinated, and claimed to have no travel history and no close contacts in his work place. His wife also tested positive when she was swabbed on July 12.

LEISURE TRAVEL BANNED

The highly-urbanized Bacolod City prohibits leisure travel to and from Iloilo, and the provincial government of Negros Occidental is requiring negative RT-PCR test results from travelers from Panay.

Diaz said Negros Occidental healthcare workers are still in “high spirits”.

“But as soon as we feel that they are under threat of getting infected with the Delta variant, we will press the issue on booster shots with the Provincial Health Office and the Department of Health,” he added.

The provincial government plans to use its procured AstraZeneca vaccines for booster shots. “The directive to study is there. We will take our time. But I hope PHO and DOH will decide soon,” Diaz said.*
