Over a hundred youth in Negros Oriental and Cebu recently graduated from a 10-day Life Skills Training, a component of the JobStart Philippines program of the Department of Labor and Employment.

The graduates completed the 37 modules of the training with the DOLE closely working together with concerned Public Employment Service offices.

In Cebu City, the LST produced 95 graduates while Negros Oriental has 49, who have all been exposed to training experiences that will help them recognize and appreciate their own knowledge, skills, values as well as professional goals in relation to the demands of the labor market.

In a statement, DOLE-7 director Salome Siaton highlighted the LST as one of the important components of the JobStart Philippines program, being a full cycle employment facilitation service of DOLE that promotes youth employability.

“DOLE has always been at the forefront in promoting decent and equal job opportunities, especially for the youth. The Department came up with this kind of training to support them. It is designed to strengthen their personal values and skills to help them become successful jobseekers,” she said.

Apart from the LST, other components of JobStart Philippines are employer engagement and JobStart memorandum of agreement, registration and orientation of JobStart trainees, online skills assessment, job matching and referral, and technical training and internship.

“There are even other trainees, who would not finish the entire cycle because they already get placed by an employer, who sees their potential early on,” added Siaton, who wished for all graduates to persevere and fully take advantage of the assistance provided to them by government by getting through all the components of the program until finish.

With JobStart Philippines now being fully institutionalized after its enactment into law, youth beneficiaries or the trainees would receive mobile data/internet allowance, stipend, and Government Service Insurance System/basic accident insurance for LST trainees, medical, swab testing, communication allowance, technical training grant, and stipend for the training and internship component.

For 2021, the local government units in Central Visayas that are implementing JobStart Philippines are Cebu City, Dumaguete City, and Bohol province with each one targeting to have 100 program beneficiaries.

Marites Mercado, head of DOLE-Negros Oriental, wished for all graduates to find employment immediately after finishing the LST training or get absorbed by the JobStart partner employer or non-JobStart employer during the mentorship or three-month technical training.

JobStart seeks to assist unemployed youth find decent jobs by supporting them to make informed career decisions, and giving them a chance to improve their technical skills and develop life skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive workplace.

Priority beneficiaries are the at-risk youth, especially those who are not currently working or enrolled in school or training with less than one year or no work experience, have at least reached high school, and 18-24 years old Filipino citizen.*PNA
