A 3-inch rock, believed to be a meteorite, reportedly fell near the guards’ barracks at the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City recently, school principal Mario Amaca said yesterday.
Amaca said that Janet Sarsillo, wife of a guard, discovered the rock after they heard an explosion at about 1 p.m. on June 4.
Thinking it was the power transformer of the school, Sarsillo and her husband, Jesmar, and other personnel instead saw a burning rock on the pavement, Amaca said.
He said a geologist from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will check the rock on Monday to determine if it is, indeed, a meteorite.
If it is, the school intends to use it for its Special Science classes, he added.*
