The provincial government of Negros Occidental turned over breeder piglets to the towns and cities of the 6th District, at the Cauayan Public Plaza and Sipalay City Government Center on Wednesday.

The towns of Ilog, Candoni, Cauayan, and Hinobaan and the cities of Sipalay and Kabankalan received 180 heads of breeder piglets. Each local government unit got 30 piglets.

The turnover ceremonies were led by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, mayors John Rey Tabujara of Cauayan, Pedro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Ma. Gina Lizares of Sipalay City, and Ernesto Estrao of Hinobaan, and other officials.

Lacson said the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic is a priority, but there is still a need to continue the livelihood programs for animal breeders in the province.

He also said that he hopes the project will be sustained to help more beneficiaries, as part of the food security program of the province.

This is part of the Provincial Animal Genetic Improvement Program with an allocation of P5 million for the 1,000 breeder piglets and 16 boars, Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, who also joined the turnover rites, said.

The LGUs of the 4th District were the first ones to receive the livelihood boost in late July.

Decena said the program aims to breed and produce healthy livestock and meat products that will redound to the augmentation of livelihood of beneficiaries and improvement of lives in the community.

He said that Artificial Insemination stations and laboratories were also established to produce high-quality livestock for project sustainability.

Currently, the province has 28 AI stations and four laboratories, he said, adding that the 16 boars will be distributed in these facilities to continue the boar replacement program.

He said that one ejaculation through AI can cater to 6 to 10 female hogs.

He said that backyard and commercial breeders continue to export live weight to Manila, Panay, and Cebu.

Meanwhile, the governor and the officials also inaugurated the Pekin Duck Multiplier Farms in Cauayan and Sipalay City.*
