The traditional Sinulog Festival of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, to mark the feast of Señor Santo Niño this month, has been cancelled due to the pandemic.
The decision was made during a meeting with the Sinulog Foundation, headed by Demetrio Ruiz, and Mayor Pedro Zayco on Jan. 6, as posted on the social media account of the City of Kabankalan.
It was decided by the two groups to scrap the contest among the different tribal barangays at the Kabankalan City public plaza.
However, the Novenario Masses for the feast day of Señor Sto. Niño will continue at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral until Jan. 17.
Zayco and the Diocese of Kabankalan called on the faithful to strictly follow the health protocols when in the church, such as the wearing of face masks and face shields, and observing physical distancing. As of Jan. 7, Kabankalan City had four Covid active cases out of 523 confirmed cases, with 551 recoveries, and eight deaths.*
