About 150 members of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and their allied organizations staged an indignation rally in front of the Bacolod Fountain of Justice Saturday to commemorate the 123rd anniversary of Philippine Independence.

The group said that the struggle for independence continues today and called for an end to what they called “the traitorous regime” of the present government.

They said that every year, on the 12th day of June, “we commemorate the bravery and militancy of Filipino revolutionaries who fought for our independence from the Spanish colonizers.

“But we should also not lose sight of the very fact that our triumph was hijacked by another more sinister colonial power that continues to ravage our national resources and take advantage of our people, thus, the struggle for independence continues today”, they added.

Bayan Negros, with its member organizations, vowed to take part in this continuing struggle for patrimony and national sovereignty, especially now that another budding imperialist power, the People’s Republic of China is creeping into our land and seas, they claimed.

“Despite our decisive victory over the West Philippine Sea as accorded to us by the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea, China continues to build artificial islands and structures there, extract resources and conduct oil exploration,” the group said.

They also hit what they called the granting of foreign entities of as much as 100 percent ownership of all economic activities in the country through the railroading of the economic charter change.

In a statement, they stressed that the prioritization of corporate and foreign interests has also proved disastrous amid the pandemic.

Instead of a scientific approach to the health crisis, the present administration has incurred onerous loans to fund its massive Build, Build, Build projects and other deals, it added.

The call of the basic masses for immediate aid is ignored. Vaccine rollout is at a snail pace, while the surge of Covid-positive cases continues to rise, the group said as it called for continued vigilance and urged Negrenses to unite amidst this trying times.*
