The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod is reminding hospitals in Bacolod City to ensure strict adherence to and comply with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, and RA 6969, or the Hazardous Waste Control Act.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Carl Lopez, said RA 9003 includes the safe and environmentally-sound management of health care waste, while RA 6969 includes the collection and transport of infectious biomedical wastes.

It said it is the policy of the state to monitor the transport, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste to prevent or avoid the likelihood of environmental contamination.

In these times of heightened environment and health consciousness, addressing the issue of proper health care waste disposal is of paramount concern not only for environmentalists and other members of the health sector but for the whole society as well, most especially for authorities involved in the regulation of this very vital element, the resolution said.

It also said the Office of the Committee on Environment and Ecology received from IPM Construction and Development Corporation, the city’s official contractor for the management and operation of sanitary landfill facility services, several incident reports regarding the dumping of hazardous wastes of hospitals.

The detailed reports said hospitals involved in the dumping of medical hazardous wastes were Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Bacolod Adventist Medical Center, and Riverside Medical Center Inc.

IPM CONTRACT EXTENDED

Meanwhile, the Bacolod SP unanimously approved a resolution confirming and ratifying the extension of the contract of services of IPM Construction and Development Corp., covering the period January 1 to April 30, 2021, during its regular session Wednesday.

The SP also approved a resolution confirming and ratifying the contract of services of IPM for the management and operation of the landfill facility in Brgy. Felisa, Bacolod City.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia made the request for the extension of the contract of services entered into by and between IPM and the City of Bacolod for solidwaste, garbage collection, hauling and disposal and the contract of services for the management and operation of the sanitary landfill facility,  in a letter to the SP dated December 4.*CGS
