BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson called on Negrenses yesterday to remain calm amid the confirmation of two cases of the feared and highly contagious Delta Covid-19 variant in Western Visayas.

This was after the Department of Health confirmed the detection of two Delta variant cases in Antique.

Lacson reminded Negrenses to strictly observe the mandated health protocols, and urged senior citizens to get and complete their vaccination.

He reiterated his call for the national government to immediately open the vaccination program for all categories, to achieve herd immunity, with millions of vaccine doses now arriving in the country.

INFECTIONS PROBED

The DOH is still conducting an investigation on how the two people got infected with the Delta variant since both had no travel history.

PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar ordered law enforcers to strengthen their visibility in public places to ensure that health protocols are strictly observed, and to prevent mass gatherings and other super-spreader events.

Citing an order from Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, Eleazar said he has ordered all police commanders to further intensify cooperation with the barangays in patrolling and guarding against super-spreader events.

He stressed that the enforcement of health protocols should be done jointly by the police and the local officials, especially barangay workers.

As of July 17, Negros Occidental logged 1,641 active cases of Covid-19.*
