Losses in the agro-fisheries and livestock industries in Negros Occidental due to severe flooding on Jan. 1 and Jan. 9 have reached nearly P60 million.

Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said yesterday that losses to rice industry climbed to P30 million and affected 2,336 farmers.

The figure represents 1,488.56 hectares of rice fields in the cities of Sagay, Victorias, Silay, Cadiz, Talisay, and Silay, and the towns of Manapla, Pontevedra, Valladolid, and EB Magalona, Masculino said.

Some 300 high value crop farmers also reported total loss of P8.9 million, following the destruction of their 28.64 hectares of farmlands in Sagay, Escalante, Talisay, and Silay, he added.

Masculino also said that the irrigation system in Silay and EB Magalona, valued at P111,000, was destroyed and affected the water supply in several farm lands.

More than 100 fisherfolk from Cadiz, San Carlos, and EB Magalona also incurred P9.9 million in losses, Provincial Veterinary Office records showed.

They added that floodwaters ravaged 111 hectares of ponds and destroyed several bancas and fishing equipment.

There were no additional reported damages to the livestock industry, as of yesterday.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena had earlier said losses in the animal industry due to flooding remained at P8.5 million.

Affected farmers may receive indemnities for their damaged farms if they are enrolled under the crop insurance program of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation and the provincial government. It is a government-owned and controlled corporation under the Department of Agriculture that is mandated to provide insurance protection to agricultural producers against losses of crops and non-crop agricultural assets due to natural calamities, pests and diseases, and other risk factors.*
