Fire Prevention Month

Being the month when temperature and humidity start to reach high levels in the country, March is Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines.

Aside from being the start of the hot dry season that usually runs from March to May, many incidents of fire are often recorded during this month. According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, March has one of the highest numbers of fire incidents in the country.

The annual observance of Fire Prevention Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 115-A, signed in 1966 by then President Ferdinand Marcos, aims to raise awareness about the causes, hazards, and dangers of fire.

Due to high sensible temperature, most areas all over the country become fire-prone with the start of the summer months, especially in clustered communities in both rural and urban areas. As we observe this advocacy campaign, let us exercise vigilance and preparedness to prevent fires and keep our homes and families safe.

Being aware of the following tips can prevent the occurrence of dangerous and destructive fires.

Regularly check electrical equipment and connections to avoid overloading that is a common cause of fire. When using cooking gas, regularly check for leaks and ensure the LPG tank is stored in a well-ventilated area to avoid the accumulation of gas vapors.

A no-smoking policy inside homes and the proper disposal of cigarette butts can protect homes from fire.

Households and workplaces need to establish an emergency and evacuation plan. Regular drills must be conducted to ensure that all members are aware of the measures that have to be taken in case of fire.

In case of fire, get out, stay out, and call for help. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.

Fires rarely happen, but when they do occur, the chances for injury, destruction, and even deaths are high. Fire Prevention Month helps us to be aware of the hazards and recognize the importance of preparedness that decreases the chances of such accidents from happening and increases the chances of survival.*
