BY ADRIAN P. NEMES III

A team from the Environmental Management Bureau in Region 6 inspected again the sanitary landfill of Bacolod City in Brgy. Felisa Monday.

The inspection was conducted due to complaints of Felisa residents and those from nearby Barangay Blumentritt in Murcia town and Dulao in Bago City, Councilor Carl Lopez said.

Lopez, who chairs the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Environment and Ecology, said the result of the inspection will be released in two weeks’ time.

He said that water samples from six areas near the landfill were taken amid claims of fish kill because liquid coming from the landfill had allegedly reached and mixed with the river water.

Lopez added that the EMB recommended that garbage should be sprayed at least four times a day instead of only three times to eliminate the foul odor.

Residents near the sanitary landfill earlier called for its closure because of the foul odor emanating from it, and that garbage dumped there was reportedly not segregated.

But Lopez said he is not in favor of closing the sanitary landfill and what should be done is to rehabilitate it, particularly the Cell Number 1.

He said they will use a new technology to avoid the mixture of the liquid coming from the garbage with the nearby water sources.

A private-public partnership should be undertaken to rehabilitate the landfill, Lopez said and had filed a resolution pushing to convert portion of the area into a nature park.*
