‘Ecosystem restoration’ pushed

The Provincial Environment Management Office in Negros Occidental has joined the global call to restore the ecosystem through various activities to mark the 29th Provincial Environment Month this June.

The theme for this year’s edition, “Ecosystem Restoration”, has been adopted from the United Nations World Environment Day 2021 urging governments, industries, communities, and individuals to focus on resetting the people’s relation with nature.

“The campaign includes restoring mangroves and forests, as well as planting trees in urban settings, including schools, colleges, public parks and green belts,” PEMO information officer Olive Seruelo said in a statement.

Localized Provincial Environment Week celebrations were launched yesterday in the cities of Sagay and Himamaylan, and the municipalities San Enrique, Moises Padilla, and Cauayan.

These events were preceded by two related activities to mark the WED on June 5, hosted by the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. from Danjugan Island in Cauayan town.

These included the WED Virtual Marine and Wildlife Camps, the Northern Negros Aquatic Resources Management and Advisory Council Day, and Virtual Wild Guess.

Today, the province will launch the Provincial Integrated Water Security Program during a virtual and onsite event at 2 p.m., that will be joined by the 31 local government units in Negros Occidental, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the United States Agency for International Development Philippines.

The City of Himamaylan will host the Kabankalan-Himamaylan-Ilog Integrated Coastal Area Management Council Day on June 9.

On June 14, localized PEW activities will kick off in the cities of Talisay, La Carlota, and Kabankalan, and in the towns of Manapla, E.B. Magalona, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, and Isabela.

On June 18, an Environmental Research Competition will be hosted by the Central Philippines State University in its main campus in Kabankalan City.

On June 21, local PEW events will also be launched in San Carlos, Escalante, Victorias, Silay, Bago, Sipalay, Toboso, Pulupandan, La Castellana, Valladolid, Ilog, and Hinoba-an.

At the Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City, the “Adlaw sang Tawo” Upland People’s Organization Day and “Adlaw sang Baybay” Coastal PO Day will be held on June 21 and 22, respectively, and environmental forum on these dates, hosted by the PEMO-Program Management Division.

On June 23, the “Adlaw sang Bukid” ceremonial bamboo planting will be held in Barangay Cudandang, E.B. Magalona, and on June 24, the “Adlaw sang Siyudad” Provincial Clean-up Day, Amazing Clean-Up and Tree-Planting Challenge in La Carlota City, and Marine Protected Area and Solid Waste Management Day in Sipalay City are scheduled.

The signing of a memorandum of agreement, and the Environment and Natural Resources Officers’ Day hosted by the PEMO-Technical Support Services Division at the Negros Residences in Bacolod are the PEW culmination activities on June 25.

On June 29, Cadiz City will launch its localized PEW celebration, while on June 30, a MOA signing and tree growing activity will be held at the Mandayao Waterfalls in La Castellana.*PNA
