In hopes of improving the game of futsal in the Philippines, the Philippine Football Federation named Vic Hermans as its new technical consultant for futsal.

The PFF formally introduced the Dutch football legend on Monday night in an online press conference.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Hermans, who played for the Netherlands’ national team during the late ’80s and coached Iran and Thailand to regional futsal championship last decade.

Kevin Goco, the head of the PFF’s futsal department, sees the new appointment as a major boost for the indoor football game.

“This is a mark of a new age and a new chapter for Philippine futsal development,” he said.

For now, the PFF is looking to improve futsal at the youth level, but eventually, according to Hermans, a more potent national team at the senior level will be put up.

“That must be the end goal,” he said.

With more indoor arenas being put up in the Philippines, the PFF has been using futsal as a means to introduce football in general to the public.

“There is a growing niche market among communities playing futsal all over the Philippines,” Goco added, citing the inclusion of the sport in the secondary girls’ division in the Palarong Pambansa and its reinstatement in the Batang Pinoy games as examples.*PNA
