Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Remember that Japanese billionaire who was inviting someone to accompany him on his planned trip to the moon? So far, I have not heard or read any report on whether there were takers on his offer. That is strange, because with all the calamities as well as a pandemic harassing Planet Earth, I thought many would decide to take chances with life in the moon. It means that COVID notwithstanding, life on Planet Earth is still sweeter for  us humans. After all, when you come to think of it, this is where we were destined to live.

Think of the creation. It took our heavenly Father  six days to create this earth, provide plants, water and other things He knew we will need, before resting on the Seventh day. Centuries later, when man grew in knowledge and wisdom, he began to wonder what other planets existed, aside from the Earth. And this began the curiosity and determination to find out if Earth had other companions also revolving in the firmament, hence the attempt to send mission there.

All of a sudden, despite the years that I had never thought of it, the name of Neil Armstrong  came to my mind. Wasn’t he the man who dared to fly to a planet he and his group could not even be sure of being habitable, and an atmosphere  that could sustain human life? I can’t remember now  what year that was, my reference books and encyclopedia are in the office where I have not gone for more than a year now. My kin make sure that my “Stay Home” sentence is fully served.

Why is the news reporting that COVID cases continue to surge in the United States? Is it not that they already have started vaccinations, initially of younger persons, but lately including already those aged 50? With that age set, will those beyond that age need to rely on prayers only? I heard that the President himself was to be vaccinated Sunday. Did it push through? If so, then he has been immunized and now can go around to perk up his people, many of whom are losing hope of seeing normal lives, unmasked and unafraid again.

Since I have barely been out of my solitary confinement, I can only depend on TV and “chismis” for subjects to comment on. Meanwhile, our young people should  take a cue from what happened in Brazil where young people  were reported to be ignoring health protocols. Of course we cannot generalize, but I do think Pinoys are more obedient in following instructions. At least that is what I have noted in our city, where you hardly see anyone “maskless”. Or is it because there is a threat to arrest such people? Indeed, it should be considered a criminal act to go around maskless!

In the United Kingdom, it has been announced that vaccinations will take place for citizens above fifty but in April yet. Well, that is barely a month from now, so all ye elders, hold your breaths until your turn comes to be vaccinated. Before then, your well-being is your own problem. Meanwhile, Europe is reportedly bracing for its third wave of the COVID, and let us hope that their medics can preempt it by hastening their vaccinations. In Bacolod, going maskless is virtually a crime, you can get arrested!

Among the most hard hit by this pandemic  are the sports people, not only in one country, but possibly worldwide. This is because the chances are great that the Olympic Games may not take place because of, what else, but the COVID threat? One can sympathize with the Japanese – the games were supposed to be held in Tokyo! I can imagine how much they have prepared for it, and, naturally, all participating countries, too. But who will take the chance? Only ONE COVID positive delegation member, could wreak havoc on the entire delegation!

When I watched the news about the crowds that had flocked to Miami Beach that is probably one of the most popular summer destinations in the world, my heart skipped a beat. How could they be so daring? TV scenes showed how crowded the beaches were, and a happy hunting ground for the COVID virus it must have been. Yesterday, it was reported that a lot of the beachgoers got infected. Well, those who exhibited the symptoms have only themselves to blame. The greatest fear is about the number of people they may pass the virus to.*
