Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Is the good news only in the United Kingdom, or is the whole world now seeing a lull in the once galloping infections of the COVID? World news reports tell us that the UK has eased restrictions and people there are now holding indoor entertainment, just like they used to. Pubs and restaurants have started opening and that seems to be a signal that things are getting back to normal there. I haven’t heard similar reports from other countries, though – maybe they are still cautious about declaring a departure of the virus, and are still crossing their fingers.

Anyway. I can’t blame people and other countries that are still tiptoeing around, taking utmost care to avoid infection from this newly developed sickness that has taken a big toll on humanity in less than a year of its appearance. So I don’t blame those who are still very cautious and would certainly not describe them as paranoid, because I think I belong to the group. If, as they say, “Discretion is the better part of valor”, then I would add, to those who don’t believe that, “Better safe than sorry”.

It is strange, though, that India is among the countries worst hit by the COVID. Does it thrive in hot or warm countries? Come to think of it, we have not – or, at least I have not – heard any news regarding the COVID pandemic and its effect on the cold countries. Does the virus then thrive better in warmer climates? By the way, I don’t know about our readers, but, so far, I have not noted or heard any reports or statistics on the effects of this pandemic on China – where it originated. How come?

But there is one disturbing effect of the so-called “lockdowns” that is worrying parents, especially. It is the observation that in England, the lockdowns seem to be affecting the mental health of children. I guess, this is because their time for play and outdoor activities have been limited, and I even do not have an idea  which countries have opened their schools and operating them normally. Psychologists and psychiatrists must  be open in giving suggestions on how to deal with this, and how to prevent it if possible. Who knows it could have a lasting effect?

Seems there is still a good chance that the Olympic Games  will proceed as usual. Reports are saying the preparations are going on for its opening, and athletes as well as coaches and managers are now doing double time in training and preparing for it. I will not be surprised if they are swabbed everytime they report for practice, but then, maybe, they have been held in safe quarters all this time to keep  them away from infections. Well, there are almost  two months more before it is due to start, and who knows. The COVID may have been vanquished by then, if all those involved give as much time to praying as to their practising!

I heard that the number of COVID cases in the U.S. has been lowest this month and the latter part of April. Authorities attribute this to the vaccination campaigns going on. But I also hear there are many who are hesitant to take the vaccines, for what reasons, I don’t know. Me, I already had my first dose, and will soon have the second, but, truly, I feel a lot safer now, I’m sure I will feel much better after the second. For those who, like me, used to be terrified by injections, I assure them that it wasn’t painful at all!

So we have a new head for the Philippine National Police. Actually, I saw and heard Gen. Guillermo Eleazar on TV a few months ago, and I don’t remember if I had noted it in this column, but I was quite impressed by his straightforward manner and also by his knowledgeability about his job. Even then, I already concluded that he would soon get a higher position in the police organization, I think the PNP will be in good hands with him at its helm.

What do you think of the proposal to equip our policemen with body cameras? Me, I wholly endorse the idea. It will certainly provide incontrovertible proof of what is happening when they are making arrests or dealing with lawbreakers. I also think it will deter criminals from tangling with them, knowing that their faces and entire appearances recorded on the camera will be difficult to refute. Only the cops should be warned not to waste film by using them to take family photos and social affairs.*
