BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon said yesterday that he is suspending the celebration of masses in churches throughout the Diocese of Bacolod from August 24 to August 30 in solidarity with frontliners battling the spread of COVID-19.

Buzon, in his Circular Letter 2020-011, said this is the response of the Diocese of Bacolod to the call for help made by the medical societies in Bacolod and Negros with regard to limiting mass mobility and gatherings as concrete measures of addressing the continuing spike in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Negros Occidental had 19 new COVID-19 cases yesterday for a total of 868 and three new deaths for a total of seven, the Department of Health reported yesterday.

Bacolod City had nine new cases for a total of 613 with one new death, bringing the number of virus hit fatalities in the city to 15.

The DOH also reported 30 new COVID-19 positive recoveries in Bacolod City and three in Negros Occidental.

“With our hospitals critically reaching their limits, medical practitioners and service staff overwhelmed and over-worked, and some hospital personnel getting infected, the Diocese sees it necessary to give the much needed support for frontliners and the hospitals through a gesture of sympathy of a week-long suspension of Masses,” the bishop said.

Buzon said he hopes that the initiative will help in limiting the movement of people, alleviate the morale of frontliners and, more importantly, heighten the awareness of people of the seriousness of the COVID-19 situation.*
