Bacolod City was recently selected as one of the two “pilot cities” for the implementation of the housing projects of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and Housing Developers Association (SHDA).

DHSUD secretary Eduardo Del Rosario invited Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia to join the virtual launching of the partnership between DHSUD and SHDA, where the mayor was asked to present the Local Shelter Plan (LSP) of the city during the online event Thursday, a press release from the Bacolod Public Information Office said.

Del Rosario informed Leonardia that the partnership between DHSUD and SHDA was forged to support the BALAI (Building Adequate, Livable, Affordable, and Inclusive Filipino Communities) Filipino Program that is committed to bring housing opportunities to every Filipino family.

DHSUD OIC-regional director Melchor Calopiz also explained to the mayor that Bacolod was selected for being a highly urbanized city and having an LSP approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

In his presentation of the LSP of Bacolod, Leonardia provided data on the number of displaced households in the city due to flooding, danger zone, infrastructure projects, threat to demolition, and court order for demolition.

He also shared figures on households with upgrading needs, affordable housing options and resources needed, and the city’s relocation sites – the 88-hectare Progreso Village in Barangay Vista Alegre, the 95-hectare Handumanan relocation site, and the 5-hectare Fortune Towne relocation site in Barangay Estefania.*
