The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) said armyworms have attacked several cornfields in Negros Oriental in the past days with the start of the rainy season.

Initial reports received by provincial agriculturist Nestor Villaflores showed that the local government units of Sibulan, Bacong, Zamboanguita, Pamplona, San Jose, Ayungon, and Mabinay are already affected by armyworm infestations.

PAO information officer Jade Darong could not yet give an estimate on the extent of the damage on crops as a result of the infestation.

Armyworms normally come out of hibernation after a long drought or dry season, he said in an interview Tuesday, citing experts.

He added that chemical sprays are available to curb the spread of the armyworm infestation.*
