Animal welfare task force created

BY ADRIAN P NEMES III

Mayor Evelio Leonardia created Monday the Bacolod City Animal Welfare Task Force to identify, reassess and act on animal welfare concerns and ensure responsible pet ownership.

In his executive order number 13, series of 2021, Leonardia emphasized that the city recognizes the concerns of the animals rights group to safeguard the welfare of impounded animals at the Bacolod Dog pound.

He said  the task force will be led by him as chairman and Vice Mayor El Cid Famillaran as vice chairman, with heads of the city veterinary, police, legal, city health, engineers and the public information offices as members.

Leonardia designated the sectoral concerns office headed by Ernie Pineda as the overall secretariat of the task force, while the animal rights advocate may be authorized to represent him as chairman.

Other duties of the task force include the formulation and the implementation of plans for the welfare of animals in the city, ensure humane treatment of impounded animals, oversee and assist the implementation of laws on animal welfare, and ensure coordination between the local government and non-government organizations for the consolidation of programs.

In Silay City, the Provincial Veterinary Office distributed 40,000 doses of rabies vaccine at the public plaza yesterday for different towns and cities of the province in line with celebration of Rabies Awareness month.

This year’s theme is “Maging Responsableng Amo Huwag Hayaang Gumala ang Alagang Pusa’t Aso.”, which, according to Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, pushes for responsible pet ownership.

Aside from the distribution of the vaccines, consultation, deworming, rabies vaccination, fecalysis, heart worm prevention test, skin test and direct microfilaria test and information education campaign about rabies awareness were also conducted, Decena said.

A Spay and Neuter program on March 15 and 29, 2021 in Silay City will be a continuing activity for the month long celebration, he said.*
