Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Isn’t the United Nations sanctioning China for its irresponsible game of sending a rocket into space, unknowing where it will land? Anyone watching the reports on TV couldn’t help worrying about the repercussions in case that rocket misfired and landed on a county, or even just an island or city! It may have been a show of power, but what if an entire country, city or island had been hit by it? The effects would have been unimaginable.

The world has enough problems dealing with this virus that has yet to be conquered by all humanity without some countries trying to show their might with such projects. Please, all you Big Guys out there, stop thinking of showing your big muscles now. We have enough troubles involving the health of our people without having to content with  the muscle wrestling among them big guys. Peace! That is what the whole worlds is calling for. And freedom from dreadful pandemics is what everyone is praying for.

News from the United States say that about two-thirds of its population has already undergone vaccination. Good for them. What about in our country, have our national leaders made a priority of making this life-saving project a priority in their agenda? Health is wealth, we learned that in elementary school, and I hope everyone remembers it, especially those who are heading our government. For instance, does our Health Department have statistics on how many, or what percentage of our people have been administered  the COVID vaccine?

Although I have been barely out of my room in the past year, with Saturday the only “day off”, when I join my loving relatives for dinner, I keep in touch by phone with friends and kin, and I am very thankful to the Lord for giving me such loving and solicituous ones. In fact I am afraid this isolation will make me gain weight with all the edible signs of their love and concern. This is a time, indeed, when you can really feel the affection of your loved ones in so many ways. Which makes me think of the old song hit “Love is a Many Splendored Thing”.

How can I help feeling that way when I have been getting so  much love and attention from my kin and friends those days? When they know I cannot join them as freely, they continue to communicate with me to entertain me with what’s going on with the family and their own world. That is why I sympathize very much with those people reported in the news who are brought to hospital with no one to see to their needs, or even visit them. Their loves ones probably do not know how much a visit or a call could inspire the patient and help in his or her recovery.

Now I can say that sports is indeed an inspiring activity for people, especially the young. With the world renowned Olympic games supposed to take place, I think in July, reports say that young people, especially from the United States, are now eager to be vaccinated so they can be sure  they are protected and can watch, or even take part, in the Olympic games. Let is all pray that this virus goes away before then so the games can take place.

We cannot say that because there is television, we are free to watch them. The concern is for the players, and other participants like their coaches and managers who are also very important parts of their teams. I wonder how the players are preparing for their matches. Do they have to be checked before every practice or training? Are they being isolated now that the games are just about two months away? I wonder if our country is sending a delegation this time. I do hope and pray that this virus has been driven away by the time the games come around.

Yesterday was Mothers’ Day and although I have not mothered any kids myself, I have  always been thankful for the manifestations of affection from my kin and friends. So I  became sentimental again when brother Bing, Elsa and Kara, brought me roses and ice cream goodies, and other nieces like MM and Stephanie Ampil brought me more delicious fare. Is there such a thing as Mother’s Day gain, even if you are not a mother yourself? Well, as Carla (Gomez) and I consoled ourselves yesterday, we didn’t miss much not being moms. And that is not “consuelo de bobo” only!*
