A 6-year-old girl, with hematoma and who was found in a canal in Barangay Estefania, Bacolod City, at about 10 p.m. Thursday, was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.

Lt. Arlyn Torrendon, Bacolod Police Women and Children Protection Desk chief, said yesterday that investigation was still going on to determine whether or not the child was sexually abused.

“It could not yet be established if there was sexual abuse until the autopsy result comes out,” Torrendon said.

The victim had hematoma in the eye, she said.

A 24-year-old male neighbor of the victim voluntarily went with the police who conducted the investigation, fearing for his safety, Torrendon said.

She said witnesses later surfaced and positively identify the man as the last person who was seen with the victim. It was his mother who discovered the victim in the canal, she said.

Investigation showed that both the victim and the suspect had attended a birthday party in the area. The mother of the victim discovered that one of her children was missing, Torrendon said.

The man is now detained at Station 4.*
