My fav spa resort of Punta Bulata was the setting for Bomber and Miren Zayco’s wedding anniversary. I was honored to be present because the entire celebratory bubble consisted of only the royal Z immediate family.

This year’s celebration marked their ruby jubilee although officially, 41 years is supposed to be a “land” year. It was, indeed, significant because this lovely stretch of golden sand beach was a love gift of Bomber to Miren, who yearned to have a house by the sea and to spend days on end feeling sand beneath her feet and the soft waves lulling her to sleep.

When all the Z’s arrived that Sunday for the lunch buffet, a special Mass was offered in the resort’s lobby. This was truly significant as Pope Francis announced the institution of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly for that particular weekend this year. Pope Francis said, “The Holy Spirit even today stirs up thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly”. The voice of the elderly ‘is precious because it sings the praises of God and preserves the roots of the peoples,” he said. “They remind us that old age is a gift and that grandparents are the link between the different generations to pass on to the young the experience of life. The pastoral care of the elderly is a priority that can no longer be postponed by any Christian community. In the encyclical Fratelli tutti, the Holy Father reminds us that no one is saved alone. With this in mind, we must treasure the spiritual and human wealth that has been handed down from generation to generation.”

The wise and eloquent priest, Rev. Father Jun Estoque, who celebrated the Mass that day, emphasized this importance of grandparents and grandchildren getting to know one another, because “as the prophet Joel says, grandparents seeing their grandchildren dream,” while “young people, drawing strength from their grandparents, will go forward and prophesy,” said the Pope. For Father Jun, it was a double celebration – Bomber and Miren’s 41st wedding anniversary and the presence of 101 years old Lopez matriarch, Doña Tining Lopez, who graced the occasion and further elucidated on the thoughts and words of Fr. Estoque. The Holy Mass ended with the renewal of our ruby couple’s marriage vows.

The Verandah open-air restaurant of Punta Bulata was big enough for each branch of the family to have their own table and mini-bubble, so, social distancing was strictly observed even during the buffet cue line. It was heavenly watching a family so close and happy together in their special paradise of a beach resort.

Indeed, “if the young are called to open new doors, the elderly hold the keys,” added Pope Francis.

My Prayer: May the children and the elderly build the future of peoples: children because they lead history forward, the elderly because they transmit the experience and wisdom of their lives.*
