Four suspects in the killing of a barangay captain in Negros Oriental yesterday were nabbed in Vallehermoso town, the police said.

Sketchy investigation reports said the four are allegedly guns-for-hire and hail from Mindanao.

No other information was made available yet but the suspects are now held at the town’s police station.

Capt. Louie Batoto, police chief of Dauin town where the killing occurred, confirmed in a phone interview that Stephen Bandoquillo Alam, chairperson of Barangay Bagacay, was shot by still unidentified suspects inside the barangay hall, at around 9 a.m. yesterday.

Initial police investigation showed that the suspects arrived in the building, looked for Alam, and shot him. A scuffle ensued between the suspects and one staff member of the barangay before the assailants fled on board a blue four-wheeled vehicle.

One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound in the leg, apparently self-inflicted, the police said.

The motive for the murder of Alam, who was in his 30s, is still being determined.

Pursuit operations by the police and military resulted in the arrest of the four suspects.*PNA
